Nestled in the southeastern corner of Sweden, Österlen is a region that seems to have stepped out of a dream. With its rolling fields, blooming gardens, and quaint seaside towns, it offers a slower, more poetic rhythm of life. Among its most charming jewels are the towns of Kivik and Simrishamn, where time meanders like a gentle breeze over the sea.
Kivik, a coastal village famous for its apple orchards, welcomes visitors with open arms and the sweet scent of blossoms. In spring and summer, its narrow lanes are lined with cheerful, brightly painted houses—yellows, reds, and sky blues that reflect the joy of life here. Behind many of these homes lie secret gardens, where lavender spills over cobbled paths and roses climb sun-warmed walls.

The heart of Kivik beats strongest at the harbor, where fishing boats bob gently in rhythm with the tide. Here, locals gather for coffee and conversation, often accompanied by a fresh cinnamon bun or a slice of apple pie made from fruit grown just a stone’s throw away. Children run barefoot on the sand, and the salty air carries the soft cries of gulls overhead.

Further down the coast lies Simrishamn, a town with centuries of history and a painter’s sense of color. The old town is a maze of cobblestone streets flanked by low cottages with stepped gables and richly decorated doors. Window boxes overflow with geraniums and hollyhocks, and every gate seems to lead to a hidden courtyard filled with life and light.

These courtyards are the soul of Simrishamn. Tucked behind walls and hedges, they bloom with an almost theatrical abundance. You might find a weathered wooden bench beneath a fig tree, or a small fountain murmuring beside beds of tulips and delphiniums. In the evening, candles flicker in glass lanterns as neighbors gather over wine and soft laughter.

The sea is never far. Both towns live by it and for it. In the early morning, you can see fishermen hauling in their catch, while in the golden hours of dusk, couples walk hand in hand along the shore, their footprints fading behind them. The horizon here seems wider, the sky more generous—a place where thoughts can breathe.

Österlen is not just a region; it’s a feeling—of simplicity, beauty, and quiet wonder. Kivik and Simrishamn, with their flower-filled courtyards and sunlit streets, embody this spirit perfectly. Whether you’re sipping cider under an apple tree or watching the sea change color with the sky, life here invites you to slow down and simply be.

Simrishamn, with its unique blend of historical charm and coastal light, is a dream setting for photography. The soft pastel tones of the houses, intricate ironwork on old gates, and gardens bursting with color offer endless inspiration. Whether capturing the golden light filtering through ivy-covered archways or the play of shadows on weathered stone, every corner of the town seems composed for the lens. It’s no wonder that artists and photographers are drawn here year after year, seeking to capture the magic that lingers in every detail.
